I couldn’t really find a picture to use that would fully represent the opinion expressed in this article. If you have one you think I should use please let me know.
I’m a big fan of gangsta rap. I feign to go to parties in which Jeezy, Ross, Jay-Z and Biggie are blasting out the speakers. Also, I actually listen to rap as well not just the beat and the hot chorus. That’s a different conversation all together but I say that to say, rap isn’t the most morally aligned genre of music out there.
If rap music had a base of “morals” it would be greed, lust, vanity and womanizing. Think about it, most of the hottest lyrics that people scream out while in a party revolve around this base. This is where my concern lies. I just want a rapper to say “Oh, that’s your woman? Ok, i won’t talk to her because I respect you as a man.” It also comes to a point where life is imitating art which is the most disturbing part. People wasting their money in the club, making it rain, or even having a short temperance with women that they were even lucky to come in contact with in the first place. I’m even guilty of this. These dominant expressions can lead an impressionable crowd to believe that these things result in stature.
I’m smart enough to decipher which lessons I should take from rap. But I’m truly scared for the kids.
